Luxembourg-based steel tube producer Tenaris has announced that it has upgraded its Veracruz plant in Mexico, integrating a smart furnace model, in line with its decarbonization plans.

The company has increased electrical energy consumption by three percent without sacrificing steel quality and process costs, reducing its carbon emissions by 20 percent. In addition, Tenaris has increased the use of scrap, reducing the use of pig iron which has a higher carbon intensity.

The upgrade of the plant contributes to Tenaris’ medium-term plan to reduce its carbon emissions intensity per ton of steel by 30 percent compared to its level in 2018 by 2030.

The Veracruz plant has an annual production capacity of 1.2 million mt of seamless pipes.
