Major Indian steel producer Tata Steel has pledged to decrease carbon dioxide emissions to 1.8 metric tons per metric ton of steel produced by 2012 and to 1.5 metric tons by 2020, a top Tata official stated on Monday. The company's current emission level is two metric tons of carbon dioxide per metric ton of steel produced.

As reported by international newswires, company managing director H.M. Nerurkar said at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) conference in Kolkata that Tata Steel's carbon dioxide emissions were already below the global industry average of 2.2 metric tons per metric ton of steel. Indicating that decreasing carbon emissions to 1.7 metric tons per metric ton of steel would be relatively easy, he pointed out that the real challenge starts at lower levels.

In addition, speaking in relation to Tata Steel's European unit Corus, Mr. Nerurkar said that the European market is slowly increasing orders and that he was optimistic about the future in the region. The European unit received a $510 million railway contract last week from French operator SNFC.
