South Africa’s Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel has officially reopened the Cape Town Iron and Steel Works (Cisco) plant in Kuils River, in the Western Cape, according to media reports.

Cisco plant was purchased in 2012 by Turkish company DHT Holdings, which has invested ZAR 550 million ($43.8 million) to expand and upgrade the facilities.

The electric arc furnace plant serves the manufacturing and construction industries. Products are sold domestically as well as exported. At full production, Cisco expects to use 500,000 mt of scrap per year, thereby limiting the country’s scrap exports.
