Severstal issues Q3 2009 production results

The Russian steel producer Severstal has issued its operational results for the third quarter of 2009. The figures include the consolidated production data (net of intercompany sales) of all Russia-based and overseas facilities of Severstal.

According to the company release, in Q3 2009 Severstal registered a 19 percent increase in its crude steel output to 4.52 million metric tons, and also a 19 percent growth in its rolled steel product output to 3.426 million metric tons, including 1.73 million metric tons of hot rolled strips and plates - up 28 percent, 717,026 metric tons of cold rolled sheet - up 17 percent, 489,587 metric tons of galvanized and other metallic coated sheet - up 15 percent, 80,851 metric tons of color coated sheet - up 16 percent, and 376,134 metric tons of long products - up five percent, all compared to Q2 2009.

During the period in question, Severstal also saw a 268 percent increase quarter on quarter in its semi-finished steel product output to 513,583 metric tons, and a 22 percent growth in its downstream product output to 422,388 mt, including 229,120 mt of metalware products - up 15 percent, 80,432 mt of large diameter pipes - up 132 percent, and 112,835 mt of other tubes and pipes and formed shapes - up one percent, all compared to the second quarter of the current year.

In addition, in Q3 this year, Severstal significantly increased its coking coal concentrate output to 328,106 mt from 45,277 mt in Q2, but decreased its coking coal output by 86 percent to 11,664 mt quarter on quarter. The company also produced 1.44 million metric tons of iron ore - up 30 percent, including 112,789 mt of iron ore concentrate, the production of which was restarted in this quarter, and 1.33 million mt of iron ore pellets - up 20 percent, all compared to Q2 2009.

On the other hand, Severstal's crude steel production in Q3 2009 was 25 percent lower than in the same quarter last year, while its output of rolled products decreased by 19 percent year on year. However, in Q3 2009, Severstal registered a 27 percent increase in its total production of iron ore, and a 42 percent growth in its coal production, compared to the same period last year.
