Samarco, a 50/50 joint venture (JV) between Vale and BHP Billiton, concluded the first phase of works at its Alegria Sul pit, as part of a plan to resume operations. The pellet producer will no longer use an iron ore waste dam like the one that burst in November 2015. Instead, the waste will be directed to the Alegria Sul pit.

Works at the pit started in October 2018, as the company seeks a corrective operating license from Minas Gerais state environmental authority, Semad.
