Germany-based steelmaker Salzgitter Group has announced that it has ordered Energiron ZR® Direct Reduction technology from a consortium including Italy-based Tenova, Italian plantmaker Danieli and Germany-based DSD Steel Group to build a direct reduction (DR) plant on the site of its subsidiary Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.

With Energiron ZR® Direct Reduction technology which can be operated with hydrogen and natural gas, the DR plant will be able to use hydrogen to replace coal in steel production in 2026.

The unit with an annual production capacity of more than two million mt of direct reduced iron will be the largest plant in the first stage of the SALCOS® - Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking transformation program. The first stage will commence operation as early as the end of 2025 and will consist of a direct reduction plant, an electric arc furnace and a 100 MW electrolysis plant for hydrogen production.

By the end of 2033, the transformation of steel production at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH is expected to be completed.
