Germany-based steelmaker Salzgitter Group has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with German natural gas company VNG to jointly investigate the options for supplying hydrogen and the resulting carbon footprint for producing steel at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH’s steelworks.
The analysis will include electrolyzer options and a supply of non-pipeline hydrogen derivatives such as ammoniac or methanol that can be used as sources of energy.
“Supplying the steelworks with hydrogen is one of the crucial elements of our SALCOS® transformation program,” Gunnar Groebler, Salzgitter’s CEO, commented.
