An Espirito Santo state environmental regulator has approved licensing for ArcelorMittal Brazil’s desalination project to supply water to its Tubarão mill, the company said late this week.

ArcelorMittal Brazil plans to start construction works by April this year, investing BRL 50 million ($11.4 million) in the project that is expected to be completed in 12 months.

The facility will have a 500-cubic-meter per hour capacity to produce industrial water out of sea water, providing the mill an alternative water supply source. The use of desalinated sea water at the Tubarão mill aims to increase water security and guarantee the mill’s operational stability.
