The apparent consumption of rebar in Mexico registered an increase of 11.6 percent, year-over-year, in July, totaling 328,000 metric tons (mt), it is the second consecutive annual increase and the sixth in the year, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.

Rebar is the fourth largest finished steel product with the highest consumption in Mexico and the first in production.

In July, production decreased 1.1 percent, year-on-year, to 345,000 mt. It is the fourth consecutive annual decline. Despite the downward trend, in the seventh month of the year, rod production represented 23.9 percent of the total production of finished steel products. It is the second highest turnout so far this year, surpassed only by 25 percent of February's total.

In export, the volume of rebar decreased 58.2 percent or 32,000 to total 23,000 mt. It is the second lowest level, at least so far this year. The lowest was in May with 21,000 mt and in May of last year 77,000 mt were exported.

In August, SteelOrbis published that the Mexican Grupo Acerero requested the Ministry of Economy to initiate a Binational Panel under the USMCA due to the dumping margin that the United States Department of Commerce decreed for that company of 16.28 percent. That is 7.1 times greater than that of Grupo DeAcero and 2.8 times greater than the rest of its commercial rivals in the export of rebar to the US market.

In Canacero's list of the 10 most imported finished steel products, there are no records of the rod.

In the accumulated January-July, rod consumption increased 9.2 percent, year-over-year, to 2.41 million mt and production decreased 1.4 percent to 2.56 million mt.

According to industry data, the steel producers that manufacture rod are ArcelorMittal, DeAcero, Gerdau Corsa, Grupo Acerero, Grupo Simec (through Aceros San Luis, Aceros DM and Siderúrgica del Golfo, Sigosa, among others), Ternium, and Tyasa.
