Turkish integrated long steel producer Kardemir Karabük Demir Çelik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. (Kardemir) has awarded UK-based plantmaker Danieli Technologies a contract to modernize the automation environment across its meltshop.
The project includes the modernization of automation systems for three BOF’s, four single ladle furnaces, and one vacuum degasser. Each converter is designed for 120-ton heats. According to Primetals, the new Level 2 process optimization system will integrate all units into a single digital architecture, connecting metallurgical, operational, and planning data in one environment.
The plantmaker stated that this unified “steelmaking backbone” will provide operators and metallurgists with a shared interface and standardized procedures, improving data consistency, process execution, and transparency across shifts and production units.
With this modernization project, Kardemir aims to reduce reblows in the meltshop, lower energy consumption in secondary metallurgy, improve yield, and increase overall productivity. Commenting on the project, Sefa Çetinkaya, operational technologies manager at Kardemir, said that the producer expects significant improvements in steelmaking performance through the unified Level 2 environment.
“We are excited to embark on this significant Level 2 project with Primetals as part of our steel plant's digital transformation. These advanced automation solutions will enhance data integration across our facility, making our production processes smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable. I am confident this partnership will deliver excellent results,” Çetinkaya stated.
