Portuguese flat steel producer Lusosider Aços Planos has launched a new project to improve zinc efficiency at its continuous galvanizing line in Paio Pires, with an annual capacity of 275,000 mt. The company has commissioned France-based machine industry company Fives Group to deliver a digital solution that reduces zinc consumption while ensuring higher coating quality.
Digital solution for improved coating performance
The project centers on the installation of a new air-knife model designed under a performance-based contract. This advanced system fully automates the wiping process, enabling precise adjustment of coating parameters. By stabilizing zinc-coating weights during transitions, the model helps limit overcoating, cut zinc usage and improve surface quality.
According to Rui Gonçalves, maintenance and investments manager at Lusosider, the new technology will provide greater control over the zinc pot zone, especially during transitional periods. “This solution will significantly reduce zinc consumption and prevent quality issues,” he noted.
