Philippines’ SteelAsia to substitute structural steel imports with new heavy section plant

Thursday, 23 January 2025 17:14:07 (GMT+3)   |   Istanbul

The Philippines-based steel producer SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation has announced that it is building a heavy structural steel products plant in Candelaria, Quezon, to substitute imported products. The plant will start commercial production by 2027 and is expected to save the country $1.2 billion annually by reducing dependence on imports.

According to the statement, the plant will produce over one million mt of structural steel such as H-beams, I-beams, angles, channels, sheet piles, plates and other heavy profiles. With the use of recycled scrap and electric arc furnace technology, the project will enable the company’s carbon footprint to be 90 percent lower than the traditional steelmaking process. The plant will create around 7,000 jobs.
