The Peruvian government plans to “gradually” resume mining, including iron ore, and civil construction activities in May, according to a government report released May 3.

Both the mining and civil constructions segments were included in a list of sectors that may resume operations first. Each sector is expected to prepare its own health and safety protocols, which should be presented by May 8.

Peru was one of several Latin American countries, along with Argentina, to adopt a strict lockdown policy to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

Brazil-based integrated steelmaker Gerdau, which owns Siderperu, had halted steel production in Peru. Peru’s key iron ore producer, Shougang Hierro Peru, also suspended activities during the pandemic.
