Luxembourg-based plantmaker Paul Wurth has announced that it will upgrade the blast furnace No.5 of Taranto-based Italian steel producer Ilva. The plant will be upgraded by EU-defined best available technologies in order to match latest environmental standards.

In March 2015, following a decision of the Italian government, Ilva had to shut down blast furnace No. 5, the largest one at Taranto works.

Paul Wurth will supply engineering services which will make up a state-of-the-art ironmaking facility. The renewal of the mentioned blast furnace is scheduled to be completed within 12 months.

After completion of this large-scale reline project, Taranto steel plant will be able to operate its new blast furnace No. 5 in compliance with the latest environmental and safety standards.
