France-based dam constructor Hydroplus has used Finnish stainless producer Outokumpu's lean duplex LDX 2101® stainless steel in the upgrade of the La Para dam in Adelaide, Australia with Fusegates®, a technology to increase reservoir storage capacity with the help of a non-mechanical structure that sits atop the spillway of a dam.

According to an Outokumpu press release, the benefits from using duplex LDX 2101® are close to double the yield strength compared to the austenitic grade and a significant cost advantage.

The customer, SA Water, targets 100-year design life and virtually no maintenance. In addition, Hydroplus has sought to reduce construction time on site and to deliver a carbon neutral project, Outokumpu said.
