OECD unemployment rate stable at 5.3 percent in July

In July this year, the unemployment rate of the 34 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries remained stable at 5.3 percent compared to June, according to new figures published by the OECD. The number of unemployed in the OECD region in July was 33.5 million people, 15.7 million less than the January 2013 peak but still 0.8 million more than in April 2008, immediately before the crisis.

In July, the unemployment rate for the euro area was at 8.2 percent, remaining unchanged month on month. In the given month, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points in Italy to 10.4 percent, by 0.2 percentage points in Canada to 5.8 percent and by 0.1 percentage point in Mexico to 3.3 percent and in the US to 3.9 percent, while increasing by 0.5 percentage points in Lithuania to 6.3 percent, by 0.2 percentage points in Austria to 4.9 percent and in Belgium to 6.2 percent and by 0.1 percentage point in Japan to 2.5 percent and in South Korea to 3.8 percent, all compared to June.
