Namibia begins construction of Africa’s first green iron facility

Namibia has begun construction work on the African continent’s first direct reduction plant using green hydrogen, according to media reports.

The project called HyIron Oshivela, with a planned annual direct reduced iron capacity of 15,000 mt and with an investment of NAD 600 million ($32.46 million), is scheduled to be commissioned in late 2024. In the pilot phase, the project will create 50 jobs. 

The HyIron Oshivela project is a partnership between Namibian and German companies backed by the German government.
