Namibia has begun construction work on the African continent’s first direct reduction plant using green hydrogen, according to media reports.

The project called HyIron Oshivela, with a planned annual direct reduced iron capacity of 15,000 mt and with an investment of NAD 600 million ($32.46 million), is scheduled to be commissioned in late 2024. In the pilot phase, the project will create 50 jobs.

The HyIron Oshivela project is a partnership between Namibian and German companies backed by the German government.
