Minas Gerais state policymakers asked a Brazilian audit court (TCU) official to consider the importance of its existing railways, including iron ore railways, for the state’s economy.
Minas Gerais is the Brazilian state with the most iron ore mines, and is home to companies like Vale, flats steelmaker Usiminas, Gerdau, among others. Minas Gerais state policymakers asked the TCU official to consider the early renewal of existing railway concessions.
“We’re concerned with the strengthening of this important regional transportation method from where we ship our production,” said Agostinho Patrus, president of Minas Gerais state Legislative Assembly (ALMG), in a virtual meeting with a TCU official.
Vale’s Vitória Minas iron ore railway, also known as the Estrada de Ferro Vitória a Minas (EFVM), is one of the railway concessions that seek an extension for its existing contract.
EFVM ships iron ore, and also transports people between the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.
