Mexico’s mining industry contracts further in May

Mexico's mining production fell 13.2 percent in May compared to the same month last year and was down 1.7 percent compared to the previous month, reported Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) last Friday.

Mexico' coke production reached 104,834 mt in May and declined by 21.5 percent compared to May of last year, while country's  iron ore production reached 649,491 mt, dropping 1.9 percent from a year ago, reported INEGI.

The report shows that iron ore in May was mainly produced in Coahuila de Zaragoza, Colima, and Michoacán de Ocampo, with a participation of 41 percent, 27.4 percent, and 25.8 percent respectively.  Other iron ore producer states are Durango with 3.4 percent participation and the rest produce 2.4 percent. All coke is produced in Coahuila de Zaragoza.

INEGI also reported that the Mexican construction industry dropped 0.41 percent from April to May.
