Mexico is reportedly considering duties on imports of Canadian steel, according to officials. A media report from Forbes Mexico said the local government in mulling the possibility of imposing duties in response to a recent measure by the Canadian government to apply safeguarding duties over the imports of steel from several countries, including Mexico.

“I hope we don’t need to do it,” said Juan Carlos Baker, sub-secretary of foreign trade at the Mexican government.

Mexico is also considering filing a consultation at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

“If the issue isn’t solved, we’ll take equivalent actions,” Baker said.
