Russian mining and steel group Mechel has announced the launch of its universal rolling mill at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant.

The universal rolling mill is Russia's first complex universal producer of high-quality structural shapes and rails of 12.5 meters to 100 meters in length. The mill's capacity is up to 1.1 million mt of finished products a year. Investment in the project totaled some $715 million.

Italian plantmaker Danieli was the equipment supplier for the mill, while China-based Minmetals was the primary contractor for the mill. The active construction phase for the mill lasted two years.
