Mechel commissions second line of new sinter plant
Mechel, one of the leading Russian mining and metals companies, announced today (September 6) the startup of the second line of the new sinter plant at its subsidiary Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. The sinter plant will have four production lines, each with a capacity of 1.125 million tones. The full commissioning of the new plant is scheduled to happen before the end of the year. The first line was commissioned this past April. The project will significantly increase Mechels ability to internally source its iron ore requirements from its own iron ore mine, Korshunov Mining Plant. The cost savings from the new sinter plant, approximately $70 million annually, means that the $150 million project will pay for itself in two years.
