Mantova, Italy-based Marcegaglia Group, a leading global industrial group in the steel processing sector with a yearly output of 5.3 million mt, has ordered a 4MW building-integrated photovoltaic system for its industrial plant in Taranto from United Solar Ovonics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rochester Hills, Michigan-based Energy Conversion Devices Inc. which is specialized in flexible solar modules.

An official press release said that the project, one of the largest innovative technology roof-top systems in Italy, is scheduled to start operating in 2010. 51 percent of the plant will be owned by Enel Green Power, a company devoted to the development and management of power generation from renewable resources, with 49 percent held by Marcegaglia Group.

Once fully operational, the complete system will be able to produce over 5 million kWh annually, enough to meet the energy needs of approximately 1,900 households, thereby avoiding atmospheric emissions of some 4,000 mt of CO2 per year.
