Italian-based Marcegaglia Group (Marcegaglia), a leading global steel products manufacturer and green energy producer through its Euro Energy Group business unit (part of Marcegaglia Energy division), has announced the commissioning of a new 3 MW photovoltaic power station. The plant, which has been installed on the roof of the company's premises in Taranto, is the result of the agreement reached in 2010 with Enel Green Power (subsidiary of Italian-based Enel Group), a company devoted to the development and managment of renewable energy in international markets.

The project is among the most important current projects in the field of photovoltaic power generation. It has been totally integrated into the existing architecture, and is equipped with state-of-the-art flexible thin-film solar panels using amorphous silicon. Once operating, the plant - owned 51 percent by Enel Green Power and 49 percent by Marcegaglia - will produce more than 3.7 million KWh each year, enough to satisfy the needs of about 1,400 families, as well as reducing Marcegaglia's CO2 output by 1,900 mt.
