The Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) has granted $500,000 to US-based JSW Steel USA Ohio, a subsidiary of Indian steelmaker JSW Steel, for the rail projects at its Mingo Junction plant.

According to the commission, these projects are part of JSW’s $145 million expansion plan, which will allow the company to cater to the needs of the renewable energy and infrastructure sectors. The two rail projects will also increase the company’s finished product and scrap processing capacity.

The first rail project foresees the capacity expansion of car spots at Wheeling & Lake Erie railyard to 351 from 184 units.

As part of the second project, JSW will enhance its rail infrastructure for scrap and iron storage and handling at its Mingo Junction plant. Enhancing rail infrastructure is essential for maintaining the scrap processing volumes necessary to support a slab production of 125,000 mt per month.

“Rail transportation is one of the many aspects that are integral to everyday business operations and is vital to the steel industry. We look forward to our partnership with the ORDC which gives us confidence to continue to invest in Ohio Valley. Investing in our infrastructure will facilitate successful completion of our growth projects,” JSW Steel USA Ohio COO Jonathan Shank stated.
