Japan delays retaliation until end August

Extension of the US product exclusions deadline last week increased the worries that Japan might hit back the US products with the prepared retaliatory tariffs. Yet this week Japan announced that it will wait until the end of August before deciding on retaliation. If the US fails to meet Tokyo's demands by then, Japan will have to go ahead with its countermeasures. So far Japan requested exemptions for 750.000 tons of steel products however is only granted that of for 250.000 tons. Therefore Japanese officials point out to the fact that they are disappointed with the US performance so far. Japan and EU decided during the summit on Monday to act together against US safeguard measures.
