Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes down 5.9 percent in August

Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes totaled 6 million tons in August, a decrease of 5.9 percent compared to a year ago, according to a report from the Lake Carriers’ Association. However, the report said, shipments outperformed the month’s 5-year average by 1.4 percent.

Year-to-date the iron ore trade stands at 32.8 million tons, a decrease of less than 1 percent compared to the same point in 2018.

Through August iron shipments are nearly 5.4 percent ahead of their 5-year average for eight months of the year.
