According to India’s customs data, Indian iron ore exports totaled 19.89 million mt in 2017. The table below provides the monthly breakdown.
With the increase in domestic steelmaking as well as some production limitations through the year due to the recent Supreme Court decisions on iron ore leases, many expect Indian iron ore exports to be lower in 2018 compared to 2017. In January 2018, for example, Indian iron ore exports totaled 1.23 million mt, a decline of 17 percent compared to 1.50 million mt the previous month and a 55 percent decline compared to 2.76 million mt in the same month a year ago.
