In the first five months of fiscal year 2019, which includes April through August, India has imported 6.41 million mt of iron ore. It imported 1.38 million mt in August and 5.03 million mt in the prior four months. The five-month total iron ore imports has surpassed the total imports of 5.5 million mt in the full calendar year 2017.
In the five month period, India imported 4.43 million mt (69 percent) from Australia, 1.18 million mt (18 percent) from South Africa, 0.63 million mt (10 percent) from Brazil, and 0.17 million mt (3 percent) from Canada.
The largest two ports for iron ore imports are Krishnapatnam (in the eastern region of India) with 3.71 million mt or 58 percent of the total imports, and Jaigarh (on the east side of India) with 1.85 million mt or 29 percent of the total imports
