India scrap imports decrease 26 percent in first nine months

According to India’s Customs data, ferrous scrap imports totaled 3.60 million mt in the first nine months of 2017. The country’s scrap imports during January to September of 2016 were 4.89 million mt while they were 4.70 million mt during the same nine-month period in 2015.

The top five major sources of scrap to India for the first nine month in 2017 were the US (0.59 million mt), UAE (0.50 million mt), UK (.41 million mt), South Africa (.20 million mt), and Australia (.19 million mt). Other sources included Hong Kong (0.16 million mt), Singapore (0.14 million mt), Malaysia, (0.13 million mt), Tanzania (0.12 million mt), China (0.09 million mt), Brazil (0.07 million mt) and Others (1.00 million mt).

In the 2016 nine-month period, the US comprised .83 million mt while it comprised .58 million mt in 2015. The other leading exporters of ferrous scrap to India during the initial nine-month period in 2016 were UK (0.73 million mt), UAE (0.67 million mt), Singapore (0.24 million mt), South Africa (0.24 million mt), and Australia (0.23 million mt).

India is the third largest global scrap importer after Turkey and South Korea.
