Hebei Iron and Steel Group's new plant located at Hebei Province-based Handan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd marked a historic moment on November 17 as all of the production lines of the first stage of the new project were put into production, on the back of a total project investment of RMB 19.3 billion ($2.83 billion). The new plant will boast an annual production capacity of 4.5 million mt of hot rolled coils.

The project in question was approved by China's National Development and Reform Commission on December 31, 2005, and constitutes Hebei Province's largest industrial project built with the greatest initial capital outlay.

The construction of the new plant called Handan Group Hanbao Iron and Steel Co., Ltd, constructed in cooperation with Handan Steel and Baosteel, was commissioned on April 18, 2007. Built with the world's most advanced eco-friendly technologies, the plant has achieved a zero sewage discharge rate. In addition, the plant generates electric power with coal dry quenching and coal gas, with a total installed capacity of 246,000 kilowatts and an annual energy production of 1.56 billion kWh able to satisfy 66 percent of the total yearly consumption. The recovery rate of metallurgical slag is as high as 100 percent.

The core program of the second phase, which will establish a 2180 mm cold rolled coil production base with an investment value totaling over RMB 6 billion, broke ground on November 17. This program includes the construction of four production lines of advanced standard, with designed production capacity of 2.15 million mt of high-end steel plates, including plates for car panel production, high strength steel plate for automobile, and electro-galvanized fingerprint resistant sheet. The second phase is expected to be completed in 2010.
