German raw steel output down by 53 percent in April

Germany's Federal Statistical Office has announced that raw steel production at German metallurgical plants declined by 53.1 percent year on year to 1.88 million mt in April 2009, compared with a 49.8 percent year-on-year decrease in March 2009.

Meanwhile, during the month in question Germany's pig iron production dropped by 56.8 percent year on year to 1.06 million mt, after decreasing by 50.3 percent year on year in March.

The Federal Statistical Office said in its statement that there had not been such a strong decrease in production figures since the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949.
