German producers’ basic metal prices down 1.1 percent in Jan

As reported by Germany's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), in January this year the producer prices of industrial products in Germany rose by 0.8 percent compared to December last year and were up 1.7 percent compared to January 2012, while year-on-year increase rates of 1.4 percent and 1.5 percent had been recorded in November and December 2012 respectively.

Energy was 2.5 percent more expensive in January 2013 than in January 2012. Excluding energy, producer prices of industrial products in Germany increased by 1.3 percent in January 2013 compared to January 2012 and rose by 0.1 percent compared to December 2012.

German producers' prices for basic metals, however, were lower by 1.1 percent year on year and were down 0.4 percent from December last year. In January, German producers' rolled steel prices in January this year fell by 0.8 percent compared to the same month of 2012, continuing the downward movement on year-on-year basis seen since the beginning of last year. Meanwhile, in January rebar prices in Germany were 5.7 percent cheaper than in January 2012, while in December 2012 rebar prices had risen by 1.1 percent on year-on-year basis.
