US-based automaker General Motors, the largest vehicle producer in Mexico, announced that it will begin production of vehicles in Mexico as of the end of the year, production that will be channeled to the United States and Canada, the president and CEO of the company, Francisco Garza, told the media.
"At the end of this year we will start with the production of the Chevrolet Blazer EV and later Chevrolet Equinox EV by 2024," Garza told the media, the newspaper El Financiero reported.
Only “certain components from the United States” will be imported for production. Most of the supply will be supplied by providers installed in Mexico, among them steel.
Garza said that it is premature to talk about a production volume, which will depend on the demand of the Mexican markets and the countries to which it will be exported.
The electric vehicles will be produced at the plant in the northern city of Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, a city that is located 200 miles south of the border city of Laredo, Texas (United States). Industry data indicates that Coahuila is the largest producer of auto parts in Mexico.
Garza also said that General Motors, since January of this year, began an investment of $1.0 billion in Mexico for the production of electric vehicles in the country.
In the first semester, General Motors was the largest vehicle producer in Mexico with around 365,500 units, which meant that 1 out of every 5 vehicles produced were of its brands, according to industry data.
