Seasonally-adjusted industrial production in the European Union member states (EU-27) in September this year fell 0.5 percent as compared to the previous month, according to a report released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In August, industrial production in the region had slightly increased by 0.9 percent over July.
On the other hand, compared with September 2009, industrial production in the EU-27 in September this year improved by 5.8 percent. September was the ninth consecutive month in which a year-on-year increase was recorded.
In September this year, production of durable consumer goods in the EU-27 fell by 2.5 percent as compared to the previous month and was up 2.2 percent year on year, while production of intermediate goods moved down by 0.7 percent in September compared to August and was up 7.5 percent over the same month of the previous year. In addition, production of energy in the EU-27 declined by 0.7 percent month on month, while the year-on-year increase was 0.8 percent.
Among the member states for which data are available, in September industrial production rose in 10 member states, fell in 10 other member states and remained stable in France, all compared to August. The highest month-on-month increases were registered in Ireland with 7.9 percent, Estonia with 3.6 percent, and in Denmark with 2.7 percent; meanwhile, the most significant declines were observed in Malta with 5.6 percent, in Greece with 5.4 percent and in Portugal with 4.7 percent.
