France-headquartered mining and metallurgical company Eramet has announced its manganese ore and alloys production results for the first quarter this year.

Despite the coronavirus outbreak and consequent shutdowns in the steel sector which is the main outlet for manganese, Eramet managed to increase both manganese production and shipments. In the January-March period  this year, the company produced 1.288 million mt of manganese ore and 196,000 mt of manganese alloys, up 28.2 percent and 2.6 percent, respectively, both year on year.

In the given period, Eramet’s manganese sales by value, which represent about 46 percent of total company’s consolidated sales, fell by 17.3 percent year on year to €359 million. However, the decline caused by much lower selling prices in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, especially for manganese ore (down 34 percent year on year), was partly offset by the growth in the group’s shipments. In the given period, the company’s shipments of manganese ore increased by 24.7 percent year on year to 1.242 million mt, with 1 million mt of manganese ore supplied to third parties, up 28.9 percent year on year. Its manganese alloy sales increased by 3.4 percent year on year to 181,000 mt, SteelOrbis has learned.
