EPA cites Alton Steel for clean-air violations
Chicago's Alton Steel Inc. has failed to comply with federal emissions monitoring, recordkeeping and reporting requirements, according to a statement released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, June 30. EPA Region 5 cited Alton's steel manufacturing plant for alleged clean-air violations at its 5 Cut St., Alton, Ill. location where electric arc furnace and other equipment can emit gases containing particulates (dust, smoke, ash). "We will take whatever steps are needed to ensure compliance with the Clean Air Act," the EPA's acting regional administrator Bharat Mathur said. These are preliminary findings of violations. To resolve them, EPA may issue a compliance order, assess an administrative penalty or bring suit against the company. Alton has 30 days from receipt of the notice to meet with EPA to discuss resolving the allegations. "EPA's mission is to protect public health and the environment," Mathur said. Inhaling high concentrations of particulates can affect children, the elderly and people with heart and lung diseases the most.EPA cites Alton Steel for clean-air violations
