A draft law under discussion at Brazil’s lower house of representatives, the Chamber of Deputies, aims to limit mining and iron ore exploration in certain situations.

Draft law number 2945/21 will prevent mining exploration, including iron ore exploration, in areas in which people have been forced to evacuate due to the risk of a dam collapse. The draft law proposes to halt environmental licensing processes until the affected people are fully compensated for the inconvenience.

Additionally, a company that forced people to evacuate a certain area cannot resume activities without a consultation with the involved communities.

If approved at both Brazilian chambers, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, the draft law would affect companies that didn’t experience a dam collapse, but forced communities to leave their homes due to preventive measures.
