Italian plantmaker Danieli has announced that it will supply a new Energiron Zero Reformer Plant with direct reduction technology for the IJmuiden plant of Tata Steel Nederland, a subsidiary of Indian steelmaker Tata Steel, for the production of high-quality direct reduced iron (DRI).

The plant, which will be capable of decreasing carbon emissions by 40 percent by replacing existing blast furnace and coke oven plants, will have an annual capacity of 2.5 million mt of hot and cold DRI. The hot DRI will be conveyed to a new electric arc furnace via the Hytemp® system, further increasing the overall energy efficiency of the new facility. The Energiron technology includes a carbon capture system and is hydrogen-ready, making it possible to use any mix of natural gas and hydrogen as a reducing agent.
