Coal exports from the Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) terminals based at Port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, totaled 8.97 million mt in March this year, decreasing by 8.81 percent compared to February, according to the company's announcement. 10 percent of the total coal handled at the terminals was coking coal.
In the first three months of this year, coking coal exports constituted 12 percent of overall coal exports from PWCS, which totaled 28.01 million mt, up 6.59 percent compared to the same period last year.
According to the released information, Japan was the largest export destination for coal shipments from PWCS in the first three months of the year, with shipments to Japan accounting for 43.93 percent of total shipments, while coal exports to China constituted 23.71 percent of the total.
PWCS accounts for one third of Australia's export of coal, which is the country's second most important export commodity in terms of value.
