CARES launches CBAM verification service for steel producers

UK-based certification body CARES has launched a dedicated verification service to support steel companies in complying with the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

The EU CBAM officially entered its definitive phase on January 1, 2026, with certificate surrender obligations scheduled to begin in 2027 for emissions embedded in goods imported during 2026. Under the framework, exporters must submit independently verified emissions data, making third-party verification a key requirement.

The new service is tailored specifically for the steel sector, covering raw materials such as pig iron, ferroalloys, and hot briquetted iron or direct reduced iron, as well as semi-finished and finished steel products.

Accreditation and regulatory alignment

CARES has initiated the accreditation process with a recognized EU National Accreditation Body to ensure compliance with CBAM regulations.

This step is essential to guarantee that verification results are accepted within the EU system.

Preparing for dual CBAM regimes

Looking ahead, CARES highlighted that the UK’s CBAM is set to come into force on January 1, 2027.

The organization stated that it is ready to support stakeholders navigating both EU and UK carbon border systems, as the steel industry accelerates its transition toward low-emission production.
