Canada Finance Ministry has announced that it has provided some relief for the safeguard measures on steel and aluminum imports, imposed as a response to Section 232 measures in the US.

Accordingly, Canada will provide relief for specific companies facing particular circumstances, such as contractual obligations. In addition, the Government announced surtax relief for Canadian companies importing steel products that were in transit before provisional safeguards were imposed on October 25, 2018. This relief responds to concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the impact of provisional safeguards on downstream users and importers.

On October 11, Canada imposed 25 percent safeguard duty for 200 days, if the quotas are exceeded, applicable as of October 25 on the imports of heavy plate, concrete reinforcing bar, energy tubular products, hot-rolled sheet, pre-painted steel, stainless steel wire and wire rod.
