Mexican steel association Canacero has welcomed this week Mexico’s decision to reciprocally impose duties on US steel, following the Trump administration’s decision to impose levies on steel imports from Mexico, Canada, and the EU.
Canacero said it “rejects” the US decision to impose a 25 percent imports tariff over the Mexican steel, adding it was “disappointed” to learn of the duties.
“(We) demand immediate reciprocal measures by the Mexican government, as anticipated by the nation’s economy’s secretariat,” said a statement from Canacero.
Canacero called for a “mirror” decision, which would reflect the same products and levies. “A smaller decision would be unacceptable,” the Canacero letter said.
Canacero urged Mexican authorities to continue negotiations, as other countries, including Brazil, Argentina and South Korea, were able to reach agreements. Canacero said the US has a $3.6 billion trade surplus with Mexico in terms of steel products.
