Brazilian industrial production declines in May

The industrial production in Brazil declined by 0.9 percent in May from April, according to the country’s geography and statistics institute IBGE.

On yearly basis, the decline was 1.0 percent, when compared to May 2023.

With such results, the industrial production in Brazil stands at a level 1.4 percent lower than the pre-pandemic level of February 2020 and 17.8 percent lower than the record of May 2011.

The main factors for the negative results were the auto industry (-11.7 percent) and the food industry (-4.0 percent), followed by chemical products (-2.5 percent), electric appliances (-6.3 percent), metallurgical production (-2.8 percent) and machinery and equipment (-3.5 percent).  

In the positive side, the most important factors were mining activities, increasing by 2.6 percent, while the oil and bio-fuels sectors increased by 1.9 percent. 

When considering the last 12-month period ended in May 2024, the Brazilian industrial production increased by 1.3 percent, when compared to the same period ended in May 2023.
