Australian miner BHP, through its innovation arm BHP Invent, is strengthening its footprint in China by forming new strategic partnerships aimed at accelerating technological progress across the mining value chain. The company’s latest agreements signal a deeper integration with China’s rapidly evolving innovation ecosystem.

Broader engagement with China’s innovation ecosystem

During its visit to China, the BHP innovation team engaged with multiple organizations specializing in advanced technologies. These included robotics, industrial automation, cloud computing and artificial intelligence, as well as metallurgy and tailings management. The discussions provided important insights into how these technologies are being developed and applied, while also enabling the exchange of perspectives on common industry challenges and opportunities.

Focus on innovation-driven mining solutions

Jessica Farrell, VP of BHP Innovation, emphasized the importance of such partnerships, stating, "Partnerships like this are how we turn big ideas into real impact, connecting global innovation with the challenges we’re solving every day across our operations. Together, we can accelerate safer, more productive and sustainable outcomes."

Chinese partners highlight strategic collaboration

Cheng Liu, chairman of China ENFI, stated that the agreement represents a further strategic upgrade in cooperation between the two parties. He noted that collaboration will focus on mineral processing, process control technologies and leaching, while leveraging ENFI’s research and technological advantages to accelerate progress in the industry.

Meanwhile, Yahui Li, general manager at BGRIMM International Technology Co., said that the company is pleased to sign the agreement with BHP and aims to deepen cooperation across mining, mineral processing, metallurgy and environmental protection. He added that BGRIMM intends to leverage its strengths in new technology development to deliver efficient and sustainable solutions that support the global mining industry.
