China's Inner Mongolia based steel maker Baotou Steel Union Co. Ltd (Baotou Steel) ordered a heavy plate rolling mill with 1.4 million metric tons annual production capacity from German SMS Demag. The new mill will be integrated to the existing steelmaking units of the plant in order to produce high-grade plates with thicknesses ranging from 5 to 100 mm, width up to 3,700 mm and length up to 52 m. The rolling mill is expected to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2007. Meanwhile, Baotou Steel has completed the six months long overhaul works at its existing galvanized coils production line on April 1. The company has produced 13,577 metric tons and sold more than 7,000 metric tons of galvanized coils since then.
