Azovstal, a subsidiary of Ukrainian mining and metals business group Metinvest, has entered the final stage of the modernization of its oxygen-converter workshop following the commissioning of production at its first two-position ladle furnace unit.

The new furnace has a designed annual production capacity of two million metric tons of crude steel and its total investment cost, including the infrastructure, amounts to $30 million.

The main equipment supplier for the first two-position ladle furnace unit was Germany-based Siemens VAI. The installation of the new unit allows Azovstal not only to increase production capacity but also to reduce production costs.

In addition, in the framework of the modernization of its oxygen-converter workshop, Azovstal is planning to install the second two-position ladle furnace unit, as well as a new continuous slab caster with a production capacity of 2.5 million metric tons, and also other equipment.
