A fire at ArcelorMittal’s Lázaro Cárdenas mill broke out Thursday in the basement of the plant’s battery. Authorities reported that the explosion that led to the blaze was caused by inadequate maintenance of gas pipelines.

Local media reported that excess force in the pipelines caused a dangerous friction that sparked the explosion. Emergency departments responded immediately, and it is not known at this time the extent of the damage.
