ASP starts to import scrap due to shortage

Durgapur-based specialty steel producer Alloy Steel Plant (ASP), a unit of Indian steel producer Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has reportedly started importing scrap through the Metal and Scrap Trading Corp Ltd (MSTC) to overcome shortage problem. ASP has reportedly imported 1'000 tons of scrap iron from Europe so far. ASP officials stated that it is the first time in recent years that they imported scrap and added that they had no alternative but to import scrap due to scarcity of the subject raw material in domestic market. Meanwhile, ASP does not only use scrap for steelmaking, it also uses pig iron, which is supplied by Neelachal Ispat. ASP plans to reduce its dependence on scrap iron in the near future.
