Brazilian steelmaker ArcelorMittal Tubarão was awarded an international prize for its desalination project, the company said this week. ArcelorMittal Tubarão is a subsidiary of local steelmaker ArcelorMittal Brazil.

The project was awarded the “Most Innovative Utility in a Least Developed Country” prize by the International Desalination Association (IDA), during the entity’s 2019 IDA World Congress Gala Dinner.

ArcelorMittal Tubarão said the desalination plant will be built out of its Tubarão plant, in the city of Vitória, Espírito Santo state. The company will invest BRL 50 million ($12.3 million) in the project; construction is expected to begin this year, with completion by 2021. It should be Brazil’s largest desalination plant, ArcelorMittal Tubarão said.
